Haridwar is one of the most auspicious religious destinations in Hinduism.Considered to be amongst the seven most holy places for pilgrimage for Hindus, it is situated in the state of Uttrakhand in the Northern part of India.

Haridwar is nestled on the banks of the Hindu holy river Ganga (The Ganges)which originates at Gaumukh (at the edge of the Gangotri glacier). The river enters Haridwar and flows into the Indo-Gangetic plains. According to Hindu mythology, during Samudra Manthan, Haridwar was one of the four places where few drops of ‘Amrit’ accidently trickled down from the vessel which was being carried by the mythical bird Garuda. The Shivalik hills are located to the north and northeast side of Haridwar.

Religious Significance of Haridwar
‘Haridwar’ meaning ‘Gateway to Lord Vishnu’is considered to be the starting point of Hindu pilgrimage. The summer temperature in Haridwar ranges from 20°C to 40°C, while winters are chilling cold with temperature ranging between 2°C to 30°C. Numerous devotees, pilgrims, and tourists flock this pious land during Hindu festivals like Kartik Purnima, Somwati Amavasya, etc.The month of “Saavan”as per the Hindu calendar is full of devotees who crowd up in Haridwar to worship the deities. Monsoon season is not a very advisable time to visit Haridwar. The best time to visit Haridwar is between October to March.

How to Reach Haridwar?
  • By Road : Haridwar is 200 km. away from Delhi. So you can easily book a ride in a bus or hire a taxi. The journey takes around 6 to 7 hours and the roads are quite bumpy. It is therefore advisable to take a luxurious bus rather than a cab.
  • By Rail : Haridwar Junction Railway Station is very well connected to many of the major cities in India with trains going to Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Ahmedabad.
  • By Air : About 35 km. from Haridwar is the Jolly Grant airport of Dehradun.
To travel in the city of Haridwar you can easily tread on foot, hire cycle-rickshaws or move in shared auto rickshaws. Must Visit Places In and Around Haridwar
  • Har– Ki –Pauri : This is where the drop of Amrit during Samudra Manthan. It also has a stone wall which houses the auspicious Lord Vishnu’s footprint. The sacred Ghat was built by the King Vikramaditya. Every evening thousands gather here to perform the evening Aarti.
  • Maya Devi Mandir : This temple belongs to the group of 51 ‘Shakti Peeths’. ‘Mayapur’ another traditional name given to Haridwar is derived from this temple.
  • Mansa Devi Mandir and Chandi Devi Mandir : These famous temples can be accessed by the ropeway system.
  • Rajaji Nattional Park : It is located between Haridwar and Rishikesh. It is a fantastic destination for wild life nature lovers and those of the adventurous kinds.
  • Neel Dhara Pakshi Vihar : Located on the banks of the River Ganga, Neel Dhara Pakshi Vihar is a bird sanctuary which houses a lot of exotic migratory birds. It ideal destination to indulge your bird watching hobby.
  • Bharat Mata Temple : An eight floored worship place, this temple houses numerous idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. It also has statues of great Indian men.
Kankhal town, Bhimgoda Tank,Daksh Mahadev Temple, Sati Kund, Sapt Sarovarand Doodhadhari Barfani Temple are some more must visit places at Haridwar. People visiting Haridwar generally make it a point to visit Rishikesh, which is just about 20 km. away.
